Half Moon Kill

Twenty straight days with temperatures below 15 degrees Fahrenheit had caused the Hudson River to freeze into a glacier. The trees on the slopes above the river white with ice were bent over like old men begging for mercy. The valley village of Crescent Mills looked more like an Alaskan fishing hamlet snowed in for the duration. Coast Guard Ice-breakers plowed a channel through the thick ice so tankers could inch their way northward to Albany, Lake Champlain and the St. Lawrence.
